The

Tom Waddell Outdoor Nature Club

aka "TWONC"

Who are we?

We are the Tom Waddell Outdoor Nature Club

“TWONC” and our objectives are:

-      To interest the Club Members and the local citizens in the array of plants, animals and other natural resources in the Eagle Lake area and to promote their wise use and conservation.

-                   To assist in the conservation and protection of scenic areas and wildlife havens to preserve the diverse biotic resources of the Eagle Lake and surrounding areas.

-                       To disseminate information about these outdoor attributes by means of field trips, lectures, newsletters, etc.

-                       To actively cooperate and take part in the Annual Attwater’s Prairie Chicken Festival and to champion it’s programs and objectives.

-                      To work with local and regional organizations concerned with natural resources and their conservation including the Audubon Society, LCRA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Who was Tom Waddell?

Tom Waddell was a Game Warden for Colorado County and custodian of Texas Wildlife. He began his career in 1925.  Mr. Waddell received many honors during his lifetime, some of which are displayed at the Prairie Edge Museum.

He was recognized as a naturalist, who enforced conservation laws and shared his far-reaching knowledge with others.

Following his retirement, Waddell’s continued conservation of the dramatically declining numbers of Attwater’s Prairie Chicken continued.  In 1966, he and others encouraged a fund-raising group called Texas Wildlife to purchase more than 3,000 acres in the heart of the remaining Colorado County prairie chicken habitat on the Bernard Prairie, the area now known as the Attwater’s Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge.
